Our Nation's struggle for independence began more than two centuries ago, and on this July 4th, let us be reminded of the spirit of New Yorkers throughout. In July of 1776, during a public reading in New York City of the newly adopted Declaration of Independence, residents and soldiers stormed Bowling Green Park to topple a statue of King George III. This event exemplifies the outcry of patriotism that spurred our Nation's independence, and the deeply held belief in the values and principles of the Declaration of Independence, which stated ‘that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ This tremendous showing of spirit and pride is still very much alive in every resident of New York and our great nation. Nassau: 'The Island Next Door'

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi today announced the launch of a comprehensive advertising, promotion and event marketing campaign, designed to attract tourists to Nassau County from the metropolitan area and beyond, and to encourage residents to make greater use of the County's resources.

The campaign positions Nassau County as "The Island Next Door," emphasizing its proximity, in an environment of high gasoline prices, a tight economy and expensive air travel. "What other place in the United States has the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound, first-class restaurants, top-notch museums and parks, and world-class golf and shopping, just minutes from the world's greatest city?" Suozzi said. "Nassau County has always been known as a great place to live. Now, we're showing people that we're also a great place to visit."

Nassau County Police Will Aggressively Pursue DWI Offenders This Holiday Weekend!

Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi and Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey will be joined by community advocacy organizations such as MADD and DEDICATED to announce the Department’s increased DWI patrols this July 4th Weekend on Wednesday July 2, 2008 at 1:30 P.M. at the Nassau County Police Department’s Highway Patrol Bureau located at 1255 Newbridge Road in Bellmore.

Nassau County has a unique reputation of aggressively apprehending DWI offenders particularly during those times of the year that traditionally impact our roadways. This holiday weekend in addition to our usual compliment of police officers patrolling and looking for DWI violators, Nassau County will have additional officers on patrol utilizing funds from the New York State STOP-DWI grant. The newly established DWI IMPACT team will also be saturating target areas within Nassau County under the coordination of the Highway Patrol Bureau.

Nassau County Legislators Roger Corbin and Kevan Abrahams invite their constituents to attend an important seminar regarding mortgages and ways to protect their home from foreclosure. The members of the NY State Senate have coordinated Operation Protect Your Home which will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from noon to 7 p.m. at the BOCES Barry Tech Center, 1196 Prospect Ave. in Westbury. Participating in this seminar will be: representatives from numerous lenders; banks, several housing agencies in Nassau County and independent mortgage counselors. Everyone is urged to attend this free seminar. ELDORADO, Texas, June 2 (UPI) -- A Texas judge signed an order Monday for the immediate release of hundreds of children seized during a raid on a ranch owned by a polygamist sect.
District Judge Barbara Walther took the action after attorneys for the state of Texas and the children and their parents agreed to the terms of an accord hammered out Sunday, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The accord prohibits sect parents from leaving the state of Texas with their children or traveling more than 100 miles from the ranch without giving authorities 48 hours notice.
Under the agreement, parents must allow themselves to be photographed picking up their children, provide identification and be fingerprinted. [More Of This Story]

ARLINGTON, Va., June 2 (UPI) -- Divestiture of investments and sanctions are several options Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., outlined Monday to pressure Iran to change its behavior.
During an address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference in Arlington, Va., the presumptive Republican presidential nominee outlined his ideas for security in the Middle East and Israel.
The threats to Israel's security are large and growing, and America's commitment must grow as well, McCain said. I am committed to making certain Israel maintains its qualitative military edge. [More Of This Story]

DURHAM, N.C., June 2 (UPI) -- Health officials at North Carolina's Duke University provided virtually no information about the brain operation facing U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy Monday.
Officials at Duke University Medical Center said they refused to confirm any information about the procedure, even whether it was under way, out of consideration for the family, CNN reported.
Kennedy, through a statement, said he would undergo the procedure at the Duke facility, recognized as a leader in brain tumor surgery. [More Of This Story]
